What are Learning Styles or Sensory Modalities?

Learning Styles, also known as sensory modalities, are sensory pathways on how you acquire knowledge, gain skills and learn. Multiple Intelligences is also used to describe these aspects of cognizing information.

What ways can you easily understand concepts and ideas?

We are all unique and learn from a variety of styles; hence the term Multiple Intelligences. Here are a few Learning Styles: visual, auditory, kinesthetic/tactile and digital auditory.

Types of Learning Styles & Sensory Modalities

Visual

Visual learners are the kinds of people who like to see and look at images, words, things and graphs to learn. Visual learners also like to see demonstrations, body language, animations and pictures to help then fully assess and cognize information appropriately.

Characteristics of a Visual Learner:
* Able to see the big picture and is able to organize and plan easily
* Memorize information by how it appears
* Good multi-tasker
* Easily bored by too much information or details
* Visionary
* Punctual

How does this appear to you?
Do you see what I mean?

Can you imagine?
Is this clear to you?
How do you see yourself?

Auditory

Auditory learners have a greater ability to learn when they use hearing and listening as a means of obtaining information. These types of learners learn well with sound, speech, spoken words, audio books, audio demonstrations and so forth.

Characteristics of an Auditory Learner: * Thoughts are heard as sound
* Memorize by sound
* Good at generating ideas
* Enjoy communication and talking
* Learn well listening
* Passion with music
* Inventors and explorers

Kinesthetic or Tactile

Kinesthetic learners have a hands-on approach. They learn by doing, moving or acting in a way where they are able to easily learn the information at hand. Kinesthetic learning style also uses senses, feelings, taste, smell, touch, ect... to acquire information in their environments. Writing and drawing are ways that kinesthetic types learn as well.

Characteristics of a Kinesthetic Learner:
* Feels thoughts as sensations
* Memorize by doing
* Intuitive with feelings
* Enjoys new experiences
* Relationships are important
* Social Roles and Team Player

Digital Auditory

Digital Auditory learners are thinkers. They learn sequentially and in logical order. They have the inclination to figure “it out”, prioritize and process data easily.

Characteristics of a Digital Auditory Learner:
* Senses thoughts as knowing
* Detail oriented
* Good problem solvers
* Like to be acknowledged
* Use long, complicated sentences
* Performs best alone
* Project Management and Analyzer
